to breed or not to breed
I have definite opinions about this piece in Salon. Can you wait to read them? I didn’t think so. But you have to ’cause I haven’t got time right now to go into it. But amuse yourself with this article in the meantime. It’s quite good.
Like marriage only more so, having children is an irrational act, a total leap of faith for all who attempt it. If you worked up a cost-benefit analysis of childbearing and -rearing, the cost side would be filled with real sacrifices — financial, physical, emotional — and the benefit side would feature things like “When my baby smiles at me, I go all gooey inside.” So if you don’t have that deep-down urge to have kids, if you’re not prone to melt for the smile, you should probably skip it.

I read the whole Salon article on “To Breed or Not to Breed,” and oh dear, if you’re gonna keep reading articles like that, then I’m doomed never to be called Grandma Finn. Actually, you well know I’m somewhat ambivalent about that, not quite feeling old enough anyway at 50 or so to even be a grandma. I agree that having children is a personal matter, and people should just mind their own business. I do get annoyed at people who imply that you’re selfish or can’t live a fullfilling life if you decide not to have children. (After all, I want to say, my daughter and son-in-law are one of the least selfish couples I know, and they do things the rest of us can only dream about.) Or, that no one will show up at the funeral when the childless couple dies. Yeah, I hear that a lot. Sigh. Hmmm…how do I end this? Well, read a few more articles. There are other views out there. Not that I’m pushing one way or the other, ha. I’m good either way.

Actually, I thought the article did a good job of showing both sides of childrearing…and besides, I haven’t given my opinion yet, so it might be in favor of kiddos, you never know. Or not.
